The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) is investigating the death of two people said to have been shot by police officers in Garissa.
Muhuyadin Adow and Aden Abdi were shot dead at Garissa’s livestock market during a confrontation between the police and locals. Witnesses said the officers who shot the two had been pursuing suspects.
The Saturday 1pm killings sparked protests, with police engaging in running battles with the rioters.
The police had to use teargas and live bullets to stop the demonstrators from storming the Garissa police station.
Some shops were looted as the demonstrators pelted motorists and government vehicles with stones, demanding arrest of the officers involved in the killings.

Ipoa said in a statement they had dispatched rapid investigations team to establish the circumstances that led to the shooting of the victims.
Former National Assembly Leader of Majority Aden Duale, who is also the Garissa Township Member of Parliament said they would ensure justice is served to the two departed souls.
Ipoa said the officers would be prosecuted if found guilty. Local activists also condemned the killings, calling for prosecution of the culprits.
