Kilifi, Kenya: A woman was shot and killed by police officers in Mazeras, Kilifi County following a violent standoff between striking Export Promotion Zone (EPZ) workers and security officers.
Reports indicate police fired into crowds of protesting workers who had blocked roads to protest low pay.
The security officers are reported to have used live bullets to disperse striking workers of Hantex Garments EPZ Ltd in Mazeras after they blocked and barricaded the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.
She was struck in the stomach and collapsed as other workers fled in different directions. The shooting by a yet to be identified policeman sparked angry reactions from locals as well as other police officers.
Witness said the unidentified woman was killed but Kilifi County Police Commander Douglas Kanja claimed “she is still alive though in critical condition.”
