Question: Foot odour has been the hallmark of my life for more than 10 years, despite several visits to dermatologists and other medics. This problem has completely ruined my social life. I am judged extremely harshly, have very few friends and have had terrible and humiliating experiences since 1997. I have tried all the foot powders and lotions on the market and have run out of options. That is why I am turning to you. Please help me eradicate this problem.

Answer: Foot odour is a common problem. When viewed from mental health and beauty perspectives, smelly feet can be embarrassing and can deal a big blow to self-esteem. Indeed, smelly feet can totally ruin one’s social life. People are quick to make harsh judgements about a sufferer’s hygiene, even when the affected person has taken all the necessary precautions to remain clean, healthy and well groomed.

For most people, feet are the most neglected part of the body. Unless and until they are in pain or are causing a discomfort, nobody pays attention to them. This obviously, is not the case with you.

For you to address the problem, you need to determine the real cause of the smell. According to specialists, feet smell due to a number of factors including excessive sweating, bacterial or fungal infections. Excessive sweating is usually a genetic predisposition. This means that a person is born with the condition and it could be the cause of the smell. Too much moisture around the foot has been found to cause foot rot.

One can distinguish the smell caused by bacterial infection from fungal infection. Bacterial infections smell like a rotting onion while fungal infection cause smells like bread with mould.

Medical test

Athlete’s foot (a common fungal infection) does not cause pain on its own. So if you experience pain alongside foot odour, you could be suffering from a medical condition. Get medically tested for diabetes and fungal and bacterial infections.

If the doctors give you the all clear, try these home remedies to alleviate the situation.

Detoxify the body. The body could be storing excess toxins that come out through the foot pores. There are simple detox steps such as fruit juice fasting and elimination of meat from the diet.

Artificial scents and chemicals. Try some chemicals that contain silver. The scents can mask the odour although it will not disappear naturally.

Basic pedicure at home. Do your regular foot care regimen at home. Add some white vinegar to the water.

Wear natural socks. Your socks should be made from absorbent material such as cotton or silk. Avoid socks made from artificial materials. Change socks daily and use talcum powder on your feet.
