Nairobi City Stars edged out Mathare United 2-0 in a tight Football Kenya Federation Premier League match played on Tuesday at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani, in Nairobi.

Bolton Omwenga and Rodgers Okumu were on target for City Stars who bagged their fifth win of the season.

The win saw the former super league side move to eighth on the log with 19 points, 13 points behind leaders Tusker.

Speaking after the match, City Stars head coach Sanjin Alagic said he was satisfied with the win after scoring two goals whilst creating very few goal scoring opportunities.

“Today we were very clinical after previously failing to score goals in our previous matches three weeks ago. I am glad that we are taking our chances and reaching 19 points today is a big step,” Alagic said.

“We are going to take our next matches step by step considering we are still a new club in the premier league but am happy we have no injuries with a full squad with depth currently available to play.”

The loss compounded Mathare United's woes in this season's premier league where they have now lost six matches of the 11 played.

With three matches in hand, Mathare remained 16th with nine points.

The match started on a low as City Stars defender Kennedy Onyango almost deflected the ball into his own net after 10 minutes of play as he attempted to block a dangerous cross put in by Mathare’s John Mwangi's

In the 22nd minute, City Stars almost took the lead but Ebrima Sanneh sent his header wide after Mathare’s keeper failed to clear.

City Stars’s resilience was however repaid at the half hour mark when Omwenga gave the hosts the lead with an ambitious drive from the left as they lead 1-0 at the break.

Okumu sealed City Stars victory with a low strike in the 90th minute to hand Alagic his fifth win of the campaign.

“We played very poor today and am not happy with the result. We will have to make changes in our next match to ensure win our next match,” Mathare United coach Salim Ali.
