Who said couples must stay at a hotel room while on honeymoon?

It would be unfair to assume that everyone wants to stay in hotels and that is why Alice Wahome, the director of Shikara Limited designed a facility that looks like home, but offering in-house services and class.

A view of one of the Shikara apartment blocks.

A section of the kitchen and a view of what to expect of the rooms.

Alice explains that she can only put up not more than ten apartments in the same compound to avoid over crowding the place and the noise that will be associated with it.

Shikara apartments are located in Nyali, Mombasa and situated only a few kilometres from the renowned beaches of the Kenyan coast. The furnishing and dÈcor of the apartments can easily pass for a five-star hotel.

What to expect

The apartments are built high, giving you a good view of the surrounding neighbourhoods and the sea.

They are all built in similar design but one has a choice of two or three bedroom, all en-suite.

You do not have to worry about the size of the beds — they are all king-size. If balconies do it for you, the master bedroom has one.

We arrive late as our flight was delayed due to bad weather. It is well past one in the night but the beauty of the apartments is not swallowed in the dark, thanks to the well-lit compound and the interior lighting system.

The apartments being near the beaches means they are easily accessible and couples can also engage in sea activities such as snorkeling.

This is a place worth staying if hotels do not work for you, or if you are looking for a new experience.
