Jamaican dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel's murder conviction was on Thursday quashed by a London court after it emerged that there were attempts to bribe the trial jury.

The musician, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, was given a life sentence in 2014 for the killing of his associate Clive Williams 'Lizard', whose body has never been found.

Kartel's trial went on for well over two months and he was later ordered to serve 35 years, although the sentence was later reduced to 32 and a half years.

Last month, Kartel and his co-defendants presented their final appeal at the judicial committee of the Privy Council in London, which serves as the ultimate court of appeal for Jamaica and several other Commonwealth nations.

Their legal representatives argued that the trial judge mishandled accusations that one juror had offered J$500,000 (PS2,500; $3,200) to fellow jurors in exchange for not-guilty verdicts.

On Thursday, the appeals of the defendants were granted, with Lord Lloyd-Jones stating that the trial judge's decision to allow the juror accused of offering bribes to remain on the jury jeopardized the integrity of the convictions.

The Privy Council has referred the case back to the court of appeal in Jamaica to determine whether Kartel and his co-defendants will face a retrial.

Kartel is popular across the globe due to his hits such as 'Wine to the Top', 'Any Weather' and 'Unstoppable'.
