Governor Mike Sonko

Kenyans and doctors have castigated Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko for inviting Indian doctors to perform kidney transplants at Mbagathi Hospital, a first for the facility.

The facility, run by the county government was fitted with 'state-of-the-art' theatre equipment last month and Governor Sonko shared a photo of the doctors and county government officials on a visit to the hospital.

“A visit by County officials to Mbagathi Hospital where the first kidney transplant will take place this week. Lead surgeons from India will train local doctors so that they can carry on with the operations. Kenyans with kidney problems can now seek for medication from the facility” stated Sonko.

However, the announcement did not sit well with many pointing out that Kenya has qualified physicians who have been carrying out the procedure for years.

@AmaraAlfie The equipments are rusty?

@WankioNyainda Wait? Lead doctors from India to train Kenyan doctors? Urologists in Kenya have been doing this!

@CollinsWanyama Is that the main Theater or a morgue?

@MigunaMigunaKE How are we empowering our Kenyan doctors if the LEAD surgeon comes from India? More so this sounds like operations procedure that has been taking place in Kenya for ages!

@pro_nyabuti Mr Governor that floor needs renovation. Make it look like a modern theatre.

@Undercover_Liar The equipment looks like it's been salvaged from the Dandora dumpsite! Damn!

@DrMercyKorir Why lead surgeons from India yet we have competent Kenyan surgeons (urologists) who have been doing kidney transplants in this country for many years?

@fnoluga Gov. @MikeSonko, let us build our own. 'Lead' surgeons from India can't keep our healthcare functioning. We have surgeons who perform this operation right here in Kenya.

These theatrics won't make our system better. Addressing the real problems facing Mbagathi and Workers will!

According to Governor Sonko, the first four kidney transplants will be free but subsequent surgeries will be conducted at a subsidised cost.
