Just like Yoweri Museveni says “Power is never given, it is taken”, we sometimes miss to seize opportunities even when they buzz past our eyes. Did we perhaps miss the moment we were offered to, once and for all, rein in rogue preachers and quasi-religious outfits? We accept that Al Qaeda, Al Shabaab and Boko Haram misinterpret the pure words of Allah and His Prophet, radicalise and slaughter innocents in the name of God. But we turn a blind eye (no pun intended) and are tone deaf to the belligerence, unmitigated greed and daylight theft perpetrated daily in the name of the same God.

Granted, that the political class conveniently forgot about certain minimum qualifications for one to become a cleric when they needed prayers, but got scared when the preachers threatened to lynch them at the ballot box, and made a hasty retreat.

However, fact remains that many a cleric are charlatans and a nasty stain on the pages of the Holy Scripture they (mis)quote with blessed abandon. Some literally feast on the sheep they are entrusted to shepherd. Others are unashamedly motivated by financial gain.

Yet gain, others are tricksters that would make King Herod wash with bleach and cause Cain to be fast-tracked into sainthood. We had a bus of an opportunity to cleanse the House of God of fraudsters, snake oil salespersons and missed the said bus. Any chance we can build a small window and clear some unfinished business? Just a thought.
