Actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Lady Gaga have led the winners at this year's Golden Globe awards .
The actor - who is heavily tipped for his first Oscar this year - won the gong for best actor in a film drama for his role in The Revenant, beating rivals including Eddie Redmayne who was nominated for The Danish Girl.
DiCaprio received a pat on the back from producer Harvey Weinstein and a standing ovation from the crowd as he collected the award for best actor in a drama for The Revenant.
Arriving at the stage, he said: "What an incredible honour, that meant a lot. Two years ago we found ourselves submerged deep in nature with all its complications and all the beauty that it gave us cinematically.
"This film was about survival, adaptation and the triumph of the human spirit and more importantly it was about trust. There is nobody more deserving of that trust than Alejandro Inarritu.
Lady Gaga also took home the award for best actress in a limited television series or movie for her role as the villainous Countess in American Horror Story.
"I've never had an experience like this in my entire life. The depths he went to are unfathomable."
DiCaprio also paid tribute to his co-star Tom Hardy, saying: "He's a beast and an unbelievable talent who was there every single day and who I know in real life would never bury me alive and leave me out there in the cold to die like that."
Pop superstar Gaga also took home the award for best actress in a limited television series or movie for her role as the villainous Countess in American Horror Story: Hotel .
The Born This Way singer made an emotional speech as she was awarded a Golden Globe for her role in the HBO hit.
She said she wanted to be an actress before becoming a singer, but explained that "music worked out first" before adding: "I feel like Cher in the John Patrick Shanley film Moonstruck. It's like one of the great moments of my life."
She thanked the show's co-creator, Ryan Murphy, describing him as a "wonderful human being", adding: "You have believed in me so much and been such a good friend to me."
Her co-stars on the TV show include Matt Bomer, Angela Bassett, Chloe Sevigny and Denis O'Hare.
Gaga thanked them all saying: "Because of you, I was able to shine, I guess. Thank you for sharing your talent with me. I wanted to be an actress before I wanted to be a singer. But music worked out first."

Rachel Bloom burst into tears as she won best lead in a comedy or musical TV show while Amazon show Mozart In The Jungle was another surprise victor at the awards show when it was named best TV comedy.
Bloom fought her tears as she panted: "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god. I'm going to talk to you as people and pretend I'm not on TV. We got six rejections in one day but we knew it was good."

Director Ridley Scott collected the gong saying "Comedy?" before adding: "But anyway I'm very grateful for this."
Looking at the award, he said: "Where have you been? I was beginning to think this was going to be posthumous."
He concluded by paying tribute to his late brother and fellow director Tony, saying: "I love you and miss you."
Inarritu said: "I forgot to thank all the native Americans who made this film possible. I cannot say how surprised I am and how proud I am to have survived this film with all these fellows."
