Women who smoke tend to perceived as having loose morals. This is not different among Indians.

If a woman gets extremely drunk and tops it with a cigarette, then she is viewed as promiscuous.

Recently, I was at an event where I bumped into some of my relatives. We were standing outside getting some air when two Indian girls walked out for a smoke.

They comfortably lit up and puffed away until my aunt pulled me to the side to complain how shameful the two girls were.

“Hei Bhagwan! (Oh Lord!) What is wrong with these girls! Don’t they have any manners? So shameless! I wonder whose daughters they are,” she complained.

She was so angered that she almost went ahead to beat them up. According to her, women who smoke are dunderheads who need a life.

For purposes of being fair, my stand has always been; if cigarette smoking is harmful, disgusting and degrading, then it applies to all genders.

Looking down on a woman just because she smokes is utterly ridiculous. The last time I checked, men and women are both human, right? So can we just accept and move on...!
