Gospel Singer Benachi, Inset singer Akothee

She sparked it all. Innocent Benachi never responded.

“Congrats boo, we did it again,” Akothe seemed to cheer on after Benachi was announced the winner in the Best Collabo for Mwanake, a song he did with the late Kaberere.

So after Pulse asks Benachi if Akothee and him are that tight, he simply refers to her as an acquaintance saying “I am not her boo” and even going further to allude that penning the two of them in one paragraph would affect his image among his gospel friends. Benachi then goes ahead to introduce his girlfriend, as Akothee tries to justify.

“So in Kenya a woman can’t have a boy who is a friend? It’s just obvious it’s a relationship? Whether publicity is publicity, I don’t need cheap publicity. If it is attention, then that’s my line of business.”
Its true, boo means boyfriend or girlfriend, so Akothee in this context, you win. We can then comfortably say that Benachi from that context, is your ‘boy friend’ not boyfriend, right? We will let that die.

Meanwhile, to clear the air, Benachi takes the other side of the ring to clear the air. Here is the interview:

Pulse: Your released your collabo with Hopekid, Smile, after winning at the Groove Awards. Was that a deliberate move?
Benachi: Hopekid always releases his songs after the Groove Awards and this song, which was his idea was just another that he was releasing after the event.

P: This is the second song you are doing in a collabo with Hopekid. Is there something going on?
B: Well, we are actually working on an album together, but it will take a while since we are involved in independent projects.

P: How easy was the merging of your different music genres... you know, dancehall and bongo?
B: First, I do not like calling my style bongo. I must say though that it was an interesting realisation how well our genres merge.

P: So how do you describe your music?
B: Let us just say it is Swahili gospel.

P: Speaking of Smile, there has been a lady that has been bringing a smile to your face, if the photos and comments on social media are anything to go by. Any comment?
B: You mean my girlfriend. Yes, I am extremely proud of her.

P: Oh, you have a girlfriend... do you mean Akothee, the Coast-based artiste who was ecstatic about your Groove win?
B: Akothe? What about her? What photos are you talking about?

P: The part where she congratulates her boo for winning at the Groove Awards saying, ‘Congrats boo, we did it again.’
B: Well, there are many ladies who follow me on social media to the point of stalking me. They comment on my posts and call me all sorts of sweet names. It does not mean we are in a relationship. Everyone has their freedom of expression.

P: So what you are saying is that you do not know any Akothee?
B: I do but I am not dating her, we are just friends.

P: So about this other...eeer... real girlfriend, what is her take on this?
B: She understands that people will always try to create stories seeing as I am in the limelight, especially after winning a Groove Award - there was bound to be someone who wants to be associated with me. To that regard, she does not let it bother her at all.

So there we go. And that lays this to rest.
