Palaver

Justice minister Martha Karua was not amused by PM Raila Odinga’s attempt to ‘disown’ Government. Her plea to the Speaker for direction on this pursuit of political mileage was pointless. It’s not the Standing oeders in play bere, but The 48 Laws of Power. Law 7: Take credit for the successes of others, but dodge responsibility for blunders like a Bill that creates hundreds of new jobs for Government censors!

Wondering why the Chinese are on their way to wealth and world domination while Kenyans and Americans aren’t? The average Chinese citizen has one or two children and saves two thirds of his income. The average Kenyan has five children and saves 16 per cent, but only after grumbling about being forced to through rules on when to draw from pension savings! The average American? He’s just maxed out his credit card on toys for the dog.

What hope is there that the General Ejection to be conducted at the Electoral Commission will be free and fair? That it will not be subject to political interference? Many ECK staff are known to ride on the coattails of commissioners. Apart from getting rid of the 600, we must get rid of this culture of patronage or the nine new commissioners will give us 900 to worry about.

The shoe-throwing incident at an Iraqi news conference with George W Bush has inspired an Internet game where players hurl footwear at a moving target of the US president. The game, circulated by email, gives players 30 seconds to try to hit Bush with a brown shoe as many times as possible. Sadly, it is free, so it won’t pay for the inspirer’s legal fees.

And finally...
A cautionary tale on drunken hi-jinks at the office party: A 60-year-old Japanese man who was thrown into the air in celebration at his retirement party died after his colleagues failed to catch him and he fell to the floor. The fall damaged his neck and backbone, leaving him paralyzed, and he eventually died of blood poisoning. The case came to light after the man’s wife filed a police complaint against his negligent colleagues.
