What exactly runs through the mind of an adult woman or man who lures other people’s teenage children to a lewd party? What level of depravity is it that would cause a mother to join hands with her son to willingly, and deliberately, destroy the budding children of other mothers?

Yet that is what Millicent Kithinji, 41, and her son are alleged to have done just over a week ago. This heartless mother is said to have lured some 44 boys and girls into a bizarre house party in Mountain View Estate in Nairobi.

If indeed this woman is from within the Mountain View Estate, then she may not be poor or deranged. Her neighbourhood hosts some of the more economically endowed members of our society. These are people who almost adore their children – sacrificing all they can to give them the best life can offer. If Millicent is from this community, then it is absolutely odd that she would go out of her way to not only seek to destroy the future of other people’s children, but also involve her own son in the heinous crime.

According to police reports, condoms, empty bottles of assorted alcoholic drinks, and rolls of bhang were recovered from this mama’s house. Indications are the teenagers were exposed to pornography under the influence of drugs in the presence of Mama Kithinji. We may perhaps have to wait for the trial to get underway, and possibly concluded, before the actual motives are surfaced. What is clear though is that Ms Kithinji is certainly not the only one engaged in such devious acts.

Back in 2016, Nairobi parents waxed livid and the religious leaders blew their top, united in condemnation of the faceless organisers of Project-X, a similarly crude event. The main difference between Project-X and Mama Kithinji’s orgy party was the brazen manner in which the organisers openly publicised their event. Project-X adverts audaciously invited teenagers to a night of fun, drugs, and sex. The other major difference, perhaps, is that Project-X was a global network.

Before they came to Kenya, these kinds of events had been held in several nations of the world, sometimes “successfully” and many times with serious destructive outcomes.

What is common though, is that in every nation where the plans were discovered beforehand, there was united public outcry. Even in the most liberal countries, parents insisted on the cancellation and banning of the events. What is amazing, however, is the interest that these events stir among teenagers across the globe.

For Project -X, in almost every place where they were proposed, the response ranged from 500 to 10,000 teenagers expressing interest to attend. Parties that succeeded recorded attendance of up to 5,000 teens in one home compound. Herein lies a major issue that should concern us all – what is it that our teens find so attractive at these plots of wickedness? Again, no easy or obvious answers.

Whereas idleness and boredom among teenagers have been cited as the possible major factors, it would appear that there must be more. While the teens may be driven by naivety on how to satisfy their curiosity and expend their energies, a mother who can lure other people’s children to a destructive party cannot possibly be just bored.

Apart from the possible material gain, this must be an evil heart and a wicked spirit. In our time, there is an extremely worrying level of godlessness pervading our society. Many families are today raising their children with absolutely no reference to God. Among the elite, it has become modish to be unpolluted by religion – considered by many in this class as a pastime for the uneducated and the un-moneyed.

The fact, however, is that without divine protection, many children from our homes are being lured into strange activities. Empty hearts are being filled with drugs, promiscuity, and hedonism. Without God, the devil is having a field day. In contrast, many great men and women who have weathered the snares of life into adulthood, often testify of the spiritual foundation that they experienced at home and in school during their teenage years.

Therefore, while as parents we must equip our children with skills to navigate the traps of life, we must also point them towards God who alone can be with them in every space and at every time. Perhaps it is time we retraced our steps back to the old time religion for the sake of our future generations. Otherwise, we remain largely helpless against predators lucking out there after the soul and destiny of our children.
