Kasagam Girls from Kisumu County are the Nyanza Open Cricket tournament champions.

During the tournament  staged at Kisumu Lions High School at the weekend, the champions beat Jalaram Academy by 25 runs.

In the boys’ category Kisumu Senior Academy taught Lions High School some cricket lessons after overcoming them by 58 runs to emerge the champions.

In the junior category, Kasagam whipped Obese Girls, who were making a debut in cricket, by two runs. On the other hand Kasagam Boys beat Maseno School by seven runs.

Carry Ogonda of Maseno School emerged the best bowler, while Lions’ Benson Osoro emerged the best batsman.

Earlier, Obese beat Maseno by seven runs after Obede managed 38 runs against Maseno’s 29 runs.

SINGLE RUN

Kasagam had in the group stages beaten St Teresa’s by 13 runs as Jalaram hit St Teresa’s by a single run (16-15). In their third encounter, Kasagam beat Jalaram by 20 runs in the event attended by Cricket Kenya (CK) coach Joseph Angara, Nyanza CK chairman Gerald Omolo and secretary George Madindou.

Parents of the students who took part in the event challenged Cricket Kenya to build a cricket court as they had promised in 2012 since the football pitches the students were using are rough and could easily cause injuries.

“Cricket Kenya promised to install an Astro-Turf at the Kisumu Day High School  grounds after the school management offered land to install the turf, but when the new team was elected into office, they have since been silent on the issue,” said Oscar Ochola, a parent.

The Nyanza CK officials promised to take up the matter with Cricket Kenya.
