In the spirit of festive Easter season, where chapati, a favourite Kenyan delicacy, must have featured in many plates, I wish to dedicate this right of response to my Shemeji, Beryl: Do not take credit for chapatis that Gor did not mix, knead, oil, roll or cook!
In her last week's article, she incorrectly wrote that AFC Leopards should stop acting like scavengers and instead be hunters. All these in the tussle over a youngster, Vincent Oburu. She boldly asserted that Oburu would be better off at Gor due to the team's 'good' record of nurturing young talent in view of its most famous young export, Michael Olunga.
Well, dearest Beryl, history favours the bold, but it most definitely treasures the informed! Be informed that Olunga started out at Liberty Academy, moved on to Tusker FC, then Thika United where he scored nine goals before joining Gor.
He was the most sought-after and able replacement for striker Danny Serenkuma. But, no, Olunga was not nurtured at Gor! He came to Gor a cooked, steaming hot chapati! In street lingo 'aliiva akaungua ' (he had been well cooked and burnt elsewhere!)

An exploration of Gor's 'good' record of nurturing young talents came up rather empty! Firstly, the transition from the Gor under-20 to the senior team is almost non-existent, with only Amos Nondi making the cut. A serious waste, yet Gor is out there trying to steal Oburu from AFC's under 20!
Secondly, it is easy to draw a long decorated list of talent that came to Gor while lush green, only to spend most of their time on the bench.
These are young players who had their bright careers ahead of them and after being wasted at Gor, have struggled to find their previous form.
The likes of Ezekiel Odera (a winner of Most Valuable Player prior to joining Gor), Joel Bataro, Yusuf Juma, Hubert Kopany, Baron Oketch...My heart bleeds for the young left-back signed from Jericho All Stars this season; Mohammed Maqbul, who is yet to get any playing time. Soon, he might as well join that infamous list!
Earlier this year, Gor parted ways with the young left-back, Eric Ouma aka Tito Marcelo because over his contract. His stint at Gor demonstrated a lack of goodwill by the club to young talent. He was initially signed on a six-month contract, which was renewed for yet another six months, despite his talent and good work rate!
Cheers to the boys for a well-deserved win over Muhoroni Youth. The win was dedicated to Sammy Taabu, a valiant AFC legend, who passed on last week. Heroes are talked about, but legends never die. Go well our dear legend !
