Mombasa Governor Hassan
Joho’s latest statements depict him as a man desperate to catch his party
leader Raila Odinga’s eye.
During an ODM rally in
Huruma, Nairobi, on Sunday, Mr. Joho even dared Deputy President William Ruto
to a political duel in the 2022 general election.
“You will face me and I
will hand you a very painful defeat,” Joho, who is also the Orange party’s
deputy leader, declared in reference to Mr. Ruto.
While everyone has a
right to vie for any seat, it will be hard for Joho to defeat Ruto, who has a
wealth of political experience compared to Joho, who is still struggling to
gain a foothold in his backyard of Mombasa.
Or perhaps he thinks he
will beat the Deputy President in a Goliath versus David-like encounter.

I think Joho should
concentrate on retaining his seat in next year’s elections where he will be
facing opposition from Nyali MP Hezron Awiti of CORD and Suleiman Shabhal of
Jubilee.
This, to me, is more
urgent than thinking about the 2022 elections.
