Our fore fathers once opined that if puppies are young, you may not know which one may be a better hunter, so you feed all of them. And when they grow, you see which one emerges the best hunter.

Since the advent of devolution, there was optimism among citizens with majority having unrealistic expectations within the first few years.

Homabay County Governor Cyprian Awiti has proved doubters wrong by achieving what other counties are dreaming to accomplish.

Under Awiti's stewardship, renal and dialysis machines have been installed at the County Teaching and Referral Hospital (CTRH).

New wards have been constructed in the sub county hospitals. There is regular supply of drugs in the health facilities as well as digital x-ray machines being set up at CTRH.

There is renovation and facelift being done. Trading hours have significantly been extended in major markets, thanks to the street lighting project.

Youths, women and the special groups have been empowered through the economic stimulus program.

Equipment were distributed to the traders creating employment and subsequently improving their economic status.

Food security has improved greatly because farmers are given fertilizers, high yielding seeds, green houses among other incentives, at no cost.

Rural roads are maintained routinely and Kadongo-Gendia road is almost complete.

However, more roads such as Kipasi-Samunye, Oyugis-Kendu, Magunga-Nyandiwa, Ogongo-Sindo-Ruma and Oyugis-Rangwe need to be tarmacked.

Awiti’s greatest legacy is masterminding the establishment of the first University in Homabay County, Tom Mboya University College.

It is named after the trade unionist the late Tom Joseph Mboya through a partnership with Maseno University. May 2016 intake is currently in progress.

Other than employment opportunities in the University, business is expected to thrive in the town.

Opportunities in housing, hotels and other amenities are enormous. With all these achievements in a record three years, Awiti deserves a second term.
