The acquisition of modern hi-tech hardware for the police force to counter the evolving and intricate nature of crime witnessed lately should have been done earlier.
But this is Kenya, and as is custom, every action is taken in reaction to another, not in anticipation of it.
In the wake of growing terror threats and an upsurge in organised crime, changes in policing have to be carried out and the acquisition of armoured personnel carriers which will be used in terror prone areas is a wise move.
What makes these purchases interesting is that the Cabinet secretary and his principal secretary have personally gone to the manufacturer in Jordan to oversee and effect the purchases. This has eliminated brokers and cartels that used to overprice equipment acquired by the force through middlemen.
The upgrade of equipment for the police is a step in the right direction, but it is high time that issues surrounding the well-being of our force are prudently looked into, if the ministry is fully committed to improving the efficiency and capability of the police force to handle crime.
