A 43-year-old rhino, probably the oldest in Africa has died in Masai Mara National Reserve.
The black rhino that had been nicknamed “Karanja” succumbed to old age on Christmas Day at Olkeju Ronkai area about five kilometers inside the park.
The Masai Mara Narok County Senior Warden James Sindiyo said yesterday the rhino whose sharp tusks weighing five and three kilogrammes were plucked for safe keeping by Kenya Wildlife Service led by the area senior warden William Sang left behind a cluster of families.
Its embalmed carcass has been taken to the National Museum in Nairobi.
