Narok, Kenya: National Environment Management Authority (Nema) has asked the Narok County government to build a modern sewer treatment plant in Narok town.
Nema said on completion of a Sh1.3 billion water treatment plant that is being undertaken by the Japanese International Co-operation Agency (JICA) for the town in February 2016, waste water handling will be a challenge, hence the need for a sewer.
"If the water project is completed without a sewer treatment plant, it will be a health hazard because there will be a lot of waste water in the area. There is urgent need for the county government to work with other stakeholders to build it," said Patrick Lekenit, the Narok County Nema Co-ordinator yesterday.
Lekenit said the town was growing fast and there was need to do planning afresh. Failure do so, he warned, would lead to overcrowding hence rise in slums.
"Those who planned the town did not see the need to set aside enough land for a sewer treatment plant. The rampant grabbing of public land for private development will soon turn it into a slum," he said.
