EMBU COUNTY: A mother of four has been jailed for six months by a court in Embu after she admitted to cruelty and neglect of her child.
Ann Kanini was charged with wilfully assaulting and mistreating her four-year-old daughter in a manner that likely caused unnecessary suffering and injury to her health.
She is said to have committed the offence on different dates between January and February 7, 2014 at her house in Embu town and at the Embu Level Five General hospital where the child was admitted.
The court heard how the accused beat the child causing injuries and breaking her left leg while at home then neglected her. Embu West District Children Officer Irene Komu told the court that she found the Kanini’s three other children in good health and wondered why she subjected the child to such cruelty.
NOT REMORSEFUL
Komu said the other three are living with Kanini’s sister after the Embu children office gave her the responsibility. In mitigation, the accused said she is the sole bread winner after her husband disappeared in 2009 and her children would suffer in her absence.
Resident Magistrate Becky Cheloti said the offence committed was serious and the accused was not remorseful as she was still cruel to the toddler when she was undergoing treatment at hospital hence should serve the sentence.
