Police reservist, two herdsmen killed in raid

TURKANA, KENYA: A Kenya police reservist and two herdsmen were killed when suspected Pokot cattle rustlers raided Kainuk area in Turkana south district and took off with several heads of livestock.

According to Turkana South District Commissioner (DC) Mr Elijah kodoh, a group of people suspected to be from Pokot area raided the area along the Pokot/Turkana common border, killing the three.

Kodoh further said that police officers were able to respond and managed to recover the stolen animals and that security has been beefed up in the region.

Turkana South MP Mr James Lomenen condemned the Thursday evening attack and urged the government to deploy enough security personnel at Kainuk to ensure the safety of the residents and their stocks.

“I urged the government to pursue the criminals and arrest them in order to end this issue of cattle rustling that has cost many lives of residents,” said the MP.

Lomenen challenged the government to deploy more security personnel for patrols in the area as residents claimed that more officers have been dispatched to the oil sites leaving some areas in Turkana south to realize a shortage of security personnel.

They also called upon the government to replace KPRs who have been killed in past raids saying shortages is weakening security situation in Kainuk division.
