Vihiga County: The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has asked county governments to allow it employ Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers on their behalf.
The commission expressed concern over the quality of teachers who will be employed if the exercise is to be undertaken by the county governments, as they have never employed teachers before.
“County government structures are not fully established to undertake a serious teachers’ recruitment around the counties. We are asking them to allow TSC to employ for them teachers who are competent,” Vihiga TSC Director Paul Kokello told The Standard.
Kokello noted that if the commission is allowed to employ the teachers, cases of bias will not arise and qualified personnel will be hired. The commission wants to employ the teachers, and then post them to the counties.

He expressed fears that complaints may erupt as has been the case in the past, and mar the recruitment of ECDE teachers if TSC is not involved.
“The commission is not asking the county governments to pay them for the recruitment process. What we only want to see is a strong foundation being set for our children by employing teachers who are competent,” he said.
He further explained TSC has the relevant statistics that map out the centres and the personnel that are needed there and will thus maintain a fair balance in the whole country.
