KENYA: Schools re-open today for the third term even as the government is yet to release Sh4 billion free education cash for public primary and secondary schools.

Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi was reported assuring the funds would be released this week.

Primary and secondary school head teachers raised a red flag last week, saying the situation would worsen by the day.

Speaking to The Standard, the Kenya Primary School Heads Association (Kepsha) and the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (Kessha) officials said most public schools have not paid salaries for their staff for the last three months.

The Kenya National Parents and Teachers Association also weighed in and called on the government to send the money to schools immediately.

Kepsha national chairman Joseph Karuga said school heads were forced to borrow money to finance second term activities to save the government from embarrassment.

“Second term is always a very busy term. We had drama, athletics and music activities yet there was no money sent to schools by the state. We had to ensure these activities are performed because it is the children’s right,” he said.
