Lira, Uganda: Kenyan volleyball teams registered mixed results in the ongoing Brookside East African Secondary School Championships in Lira, Uganda.

National champions Kwanthanze beat Mary Hill of Uganda in straight sets of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-15 in a Pool “A” match to bring their win-loss record in the tournament to 2-0.

Former East African champions Lugulu rallied to beat a stubborn Trust High of Uganda 3-1 (23-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-13) in a closely fought Pool “B” match at Lango College on Tuesday.

The result saw Lugulu extend their win-loss record to 2-0.

In boys’ category, national champions Hospital Hill were not lucky on this occasion as they lost 3-1 (26-28, 33-31, 18-25, 21-25) against Kinaawa of Uganda in a Pool “B fixture. Hospital Hill win-loss record is now 1-1.

Winning streak

In football girls, Tartar extended its winning streak to to two victories after they trounced Mbale Progressive of Uganda 6-0 in Pool “A” encounter.

Tereze Engesha registered a hat-trick, Miriam Chelagat added a brace while Robai Kebedi and Sylvia Madegwa contributed one goal each.

This was encouraging performance for Tartar — the 2012 silver medalists — since they had beaten Makongo of Tanzania 3-0 in first match last Monday.

National football boys’ champions Upper Hill realised that home ground advantage works so well after they lost 3-0 against Julian in a Pool “C” fixture.

The result indicates that all Kenyan football boys’ team lost respective opening matches as Kathungi were beaten 3-0 by indomitable St Mary’s Kitende last Sunday.

19-year rule

Upper Hill talent centre coordinator Gilbert Walusimbi said: “Apparently some countries are not observing the 19-year rule and Federation of East African Secondary School Sports Association must strictly address the issue in future.”

Walusimbi said his players were dwarfed by big boys of Julian and on several occasions avoided physical contact with opponents.

In lawn tennis, Kenyans won round one matches.

Damaris Musera beat Daphline Mukasa of Uganda 4-0 while Paige Mbugua defeated Sandra Khisa also of Uganda 4-1 in girls’ singles. Isaiah Etale lost his round one match after he lost 2-4 against Edward Birungi of Uganda in boys’ singles.

Meanwhile, athletics programme starts today and contest is expected to be between Kenya and Uganda.
