Five members of a family were attacked and seriously harmed by a hyena at their Mwaroko village home in Taita on Wednesday night.

The injured included a 16-year-old secondary school student.

The animal that strayed from Tsavo West National Park is also said to have terrorised residents of Iborenyi village.

Police and Kenya Wildlife Service officials said the injured were admitted to Wesu sub-county hospital.

One of the victims, Tabitha Mwachaka, 36, was attacked when she went to see what was happening outside after she heard noise from her cow shed. Her son had one of his fingers severed.

Taita DCIO Richard Cheruiyot said a neighbour who had answered a distress call was also injured in the attack.

Tsavo Conservation Area Assistant director George Osuri said villagers killed the hyena.

“The animal could have been hungry. It may have strayed into people’s settlements in search of food. We are investigating the matter,” said Mr Osuri.
