The Seafarers Union of Kenya (SUK) has welcomed an announcement by President Uhuru Kenyatta that Bandari College be converted into a maritime academy of excellence.
SUK Secretary General Steve Owaki said the creation of the Bandari Maritime Academy is long overdue and will need adequate government support.
Mr Owaki said in line with the institution's new status, there should be a complete overhaul of its management structure and that a new, all-inclusive curriculum that conforms with global maritime needs should be drawn up.
According to a gazette notice issued last year, the institution shall "provide and advance education and training to appropriately qualified candidates, leading to the award of diplomas and certificates and other such qualifications as the board may prescribe from time to time".
