A meeting called to brief residents on construction of a road in Nyeri Town ended in disarray after residents kicked MCAs out over accusations they are sabotaging the project.

The MCAs - Paul Kanyari (Rware), John Ndumia (Kamakwa), Simon Muturi (Gatitu) and Samuel Kariuki (Ruringu) - had just informed the public participation forum the contractor for the 0.5-kilometer Kangemi - PGH road would soon be on site before they were forced out.

Residents said the leaders had been opposing the project for years.

For more than 15 years, the road leading to one of the largest middle class residential areas in the town, has remained in poor condition. However, there is hope after Kenya Urban Roads Authority promised a face-lift.

The event held at Kangemi Social Hall came to a standstill as the MCAs were forced to leave the venue.

They were accused of attempting to sabotage the meeting and the project due to political differences with area MP Ngunjiri Wambugu.

“Those who confronted us had been organised to embarrass us. We support the project. We only wanted the residents’ views on our proposal for Kura to do more than 0.5-kilometers,” Kariuki said.

The leaders had to be escorted out of the venue by area chief and armed police officers as locals threatened to attack them.
