Kenya’s Shujaa head coach Paul Treu expects tough opposition from Argentina, Fiji, Samurai, Western Province and Welsh Warriors as the real battle of the 19th Safaricom Rugby Sevens kicks off at the Kasarani Stadium, today.

The defending champions face a real test after the South African tactician opted for a young and inexperienced squad following the strike of his regular players due to contractual issues.

Shujaa, who are in Pool A alongside Auckland Metro, Sharks and Germany, will miss the services of experienced Collins Injera, Michael Agevi, Patrice Agunda, Dennis Sikuta, Sammy OIiech, Michael Wanjala, Dennis Ombachi, Horace Otieno, Billy Odhiambo, Tony Owuor and Horace Otieno.

Injuries have also kept out Humphrey Kayange, Felix Khayange, Joshua Chesanga, Oscar Ayodi and Oscar Ouma.

“We are going into this tournament with so many new players. I don’t think we can compare it to last season’s squad. I respect all the opponents, but I think Argentina, Fiji, Samurai, WP and the Welsh side are the biggest threat,” said Treu.

“This is the kind of preparations we want ahead of the new IRB season as we’ve attracted quality teams across the world.” Despite the absence of the rebellious players, Treu believes his squad has what it takes to defend the cup.

“I don’t think we will miss the experienced players because we’ve selected quality players from different clubs. These players might be inexperienced and young, but I can bet they will prove critics wrong,” said Treu.

“How will they cope with big crowds at the IRB circuit if we don’t give them such an opportunity? This is the moment and platform for them to prove themselves. We have exciting players like Ojee, who’s impressive during the series and I know they will do well.

“It’s not going to be easy for us, but from our preparations, I am confident they will do their best. I have told them to go out and enjoy themselves.

“We are not the main team, but all the players have a lot to prove,” he said.

Simba are in Pool B together with Top Fry Samurai, Golden Lions and Spain, while Kenya’s other representatives Morans will battle with Welsh Warriors, Boland and Iconz in Pool C.
