Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has claimed that there is a plan to attack him ahead of the state funeral for his political mentor, Raila Amolo Odinga.

In a statement shared on X, the youthful legislator said he was aware of those behind the alleged scheme but chose not to name them.

Instead, he urged for peace and unity as the country prepares to bid farewell to the man fondly known as Baba.

“I am aware of plans to harm me before Baba’s send-off,” Babu wrote. “It is my prayer that we give Baba the befitting send-off that he deserves, devoid of unwarranted violence.”

There are plans to attack me on or before the day of Baba’s burial. I am aware of the culprits behind the scheme. It is my prayer that we give Baba the befitting send off that he deserves devoid of unwarranted violence. — Babu Owino (@HEBabuOwino) October 17, 2025

Babu’s remarks come at a time when his growing popularity among young Kenyans has placed him at the center of speculation about the future of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Many view him as Odinga’s natural successor a youthful, outspoken figure capable of carrying forward his mentor’s fiery political spirit.

Over the years, Babu has cultivated a strong connection with Kenya’s youth through constant engagement, both online and on the ground. His accessibility and charisma have earned him widespread admiration.

On Thursday, hundreds of mourners gathered outside Parliament Buildings to pay their last respects to the late Odinga, unaware that the venue for public viewing had been changed.

Moved by the crowd’s frustration, Babu climbed the perimeter wall to address them. His impromptu speech drew cheers and chants, with many hailing him as a man of the people.

Earlier today, during the funeral service, the presiding bishop posed a symbolic question “Who will fit into Raila’s shoes?” prompting the crowd to erupt in chants of Babu’s name.

Adding to the growing conversation about succession, comedian and media personality Oga Obinna publicly urged ODM to entrust its future to Babu Owino, describing him as the only leader who possesses the same courage, charisma, and favour that once defined Raila Odinga.

Despite the mounting praise and speculation, Babu has remained cautious, distancing himself from any claims of political opportunism.

“I would never attempt to take advantage of Baba’s legacy,” he said. “He was my political father, my teacher, and my guide. My role now is to honour him, not replace him.”
