Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has claimed that his security detail was withdrawn just hours after he participated in the nationwide Gen Z-led protests.
Taking to social media, the outspoken legislator accused the government of targeting him for standing in solidarity with protesters, calling the move an attack on democracy.
“Yesterday, I stood with the people, not against the nation, but for its future. I exercised my democratic right to protest peacefully against the actions of a government that is failing its citizens. Today, in retaliation, the government has withdrawn my official security,” Babu said.
“Let me be clear: this is not just an attack on me, it is an attack on democracy itself. When elected representatives are punished for standing with the people, it is a sign of a government that fears accountability, not one that serves,” he added.
Despite the withdrawal of his security, Babu insisted he remains undeterred and will not be intimidated.
The MP was among a handful of lawmakers who joined Gen Z protesters in the Nairobi CBD to mark one year since the deadly anti-finance bill demonstrations that left several dead and many injured.
Babu was met with cheers and excitement as he disembarked from his vehicle, surrounded by a crowd of young people who ran toward him.
“The time for silence is over. We stand at the edge of history, not as victims of circumstance, but as authors of change,” he had posted, along with photos of himself being lifted into the air by jubilant protesters.
Other opposition leaders present at the protests included Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, who laid wreaths outside Parliament in honour of those who lost their lives during last year’s protests.
Babu was unreachable for further comment, and the police are yet to issue a statement on the matter.
