Nyamira is Kenya's fourth-smallest county, yet it has long punched above its weight in national politics. It produced towering leaders such as the late nationalist George Moseti Anyona, MP for Kitutu East, now Kitutu Masaba, and George Morara of North Mugirango. That principled legacy still shapes a county of 700,000 people and 325,000 voters, per the 2022 IEBC register, mostly tea farmers, dairy producers, banana growers and traders. Educated and politically alert, it has become central to the 2027 race, where former Interior CS Fred Matiang'i is positioning to challenge President William Ruto.
Kenyan politics remains rooted in ethnic arithmetic. Abagusii did so for Nyachae in 2002. The mtu wetu, our person, mindset still exerts powerful influence. Should the Opposition overlook Matiang'i, Kalonzo Musyoka or Senator Edwin Sifuna for flagbearer, it risks resentment among Abagusii, Kamba and Luhya respectively. How that fallout is managed will determine opposition cohesion.
In Gusiiland, clan ties shape politics. Abagirango, the largest bloc, control Borabu, North Mugirango and West Mugirango. Abagetutu dominate Kitutu Masaba. Smaller clans like Abanyaribari and Abamachoge act as top-up votes. These dynamics have defined leadership since devolution began.
In 2013, Governor John Nyagarama chose Amos Nyaribo, a fellow Omogirango, as running mate. When Nyagarama died, Nyaribo assumed office and later picked James Gesami as deputy. The 2022 General Election exposed Nyamira's split loyalties. Raila Odinga carried the presidential vote, but UDA made gains. ODM retained Borabu and Kitutu Masaba through Patrick Osero and Clive Gisairo.
UDA took North Mugirango through Joash Nyamoko while Jubilee won West Mugirango through Stephen Mogaka. Nyaribo won governor on UPA, Okong'o Omogeni kept senator for ODM, and Jerusha Momanyi took Woman Rep on Jubilee.
Since then, President Ruto has pumped money into the county to build an edge: Sh800 million for Nyamira University College, Sh220 million for a KMTC hostel, Sh1 billion to upgrade the referral hospital, funds for water supply, Sh15 billion for housing, and 77 kilometres of tarmacked roads.
Nyaribo is credited with stability, unlike Kisii's assembly clashes and graft probes. After finishing Nyagarama's term and winning in 2022, a 2027 win would give him a rare third term. He has delivered quietly: 13 new dialysis machines at Nyamira Referral Hospital to spur renal services, digital learning in all 408 ECDE centres, and Barabara Mashinani improving ward roads. Many say he outshines Kisii's governor.
Critics cite poor communication, weak lobbying, and nepotism claims that sparked failed impeachment bids. Youth joblessness remains high, market projects have stalled, salaries have been delayed, and 40 per cent of the budget goes to recurrent costs, choking development. Local politics now turns on Matiang'i. Born in South Mugirango, Kisii, he remains Gusiiland's top figure. His likely presidential run has stirred nearly one million Gusii voters. Nyaribo, Nyamoko and Mogaka are awaiting his move before declaring a preferred presidential candidate.
Attention is shifting to the 2027 county contests. It remains unclear whether Nyaribo will retain Gesami amid reports of strained relations. Senator Omogeni appears well placed to defend his seat, having earned praise for oversight in the Senate, though speculation persists that he may enter the governor's race.
The governor's contest pits Nyaribo, from Bogirango, against Bogetutu aspirants Timothy Bosire, Jerusha Momanyi, Swanya Ogeto and Walter Nyambati. Their greatest risk is splitting their base and handing advantage to the larger Abagirango bloc. Nyaribo also faces formidable challengers including youthful politician Chanua, Ben Momanyi and possibly Gesami himself. Many local observers predict a two-horse race between Nyaribo and Chanua, but an evenly divided vote between the frontrunners could open the door for an outsider like Momanyi, Bosire, Swanya or Nyambati.
Chanua enjoys youth support, though critics point to neighbouring Kisii, where youthful Governor Simba Arati has struggled to meet expectations. Charismatic on the trail, Chanua's future, like Nyaribo's, may depend on aligning with Ruto or Matiang'i. Given his close ties to Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu of UDA, many believe he may lean towards Ruto.
The Woman Representative race is also attracting interest. Momanyi is completing her final term and is widely tipped to contest governorship. Her departure has created a crowded succession involving former Woman Representative Alice Chae, Mary Migiro, Jane Matara, Janet Komenda and Emily Nyagarama, who finished second in 2022 and is mounting another bid.
Ruto will be seeking a second term, while Matiang'i may be pursuing his first presidential victory. For both men, Nyamira is far more than another stop on the campaign trail.
