Former President Uhuru Kenyatta made a rare public appearance in Watamu, flanked by his wife and former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta.

In photos seen by TNX Africa, the retired Head of State stepped out in a classic green floral shirt paired with khaki pants and a fedora, the kind of patterned attire that became synonymous with him during his presidency, now popularly referred to as “Uhuru shirts.”

Margaret Kenyatta, meanwhile, wore a light green top with white tights and sandals, completing her look with a coastal-style sun hat.

The Kenyattas were in Watamu to tour the ongoing construction of the Stella Maris Pastoral Center in Malindi Sub-County, Kilifi County, where they were welcomed by Malindi Diocese Bishop Rev. Willybard Lagho.

They were accompanied by Maina Gakuo and his wife Anna Kadzo Gakuo Kenyatta.

According to Catholic-owned Radio Tumaini, the Kenyattas donated Sh1.5 million towards the completion of the facility.

“The retired President of Kenya, His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, has made a generous donation of Ksh 1.5 million towards the ongoing construction of the Stella Maris Pastoral Center in Watamu, Kilifi County. He was received by His Lordship Rt. Rev. Willybard Lagho, the Bishop of Malindi Diocese, who expressed gratitude on behalf of the Catholic community,” part of the social media post read.

Bishop Lagho was joined by Rev. Fr. Bernard Malasi, Rev. Fr. Stephen Kadenge and Mr. David Ndwiga during the visit.

Mr. Kenyatta praised the diocese’s commitment to financial self-reliance through the project and pledged to continue supporting the initiative until completion.

Once finished, the Stella Maris Pastoral Center is expected to serve as a spiritual, social, and economic hub for the Catholic faithful and the wider community in Malindi.

The appearance comes at a time when the former President has kept a relatively low profile in retirement, contrasting with his earlier post-State House engagements.

His last major public outing was on August 1st during a joint EAC-SADC Summit on the security situation in eastern DRC, where he was photographed sharing a light moment with President William Ruto at State House, in photos that sent shockwaves across the political divide and the nation at large.
