Ever wondered what to do with the pile of magazines that you have accumulated over time? Wonder no more because you can use them to make cool magazine roll crafts.

This easy craft will transform your docile magazines to crafts of art in the form of coasters, mirrors or photo frames or pencil holders. This is a great activity to do with your children over the holidays and an opportunity to get them off the screen into some handicrafts.

The items you need to make rolled up magazine coasters are a pair of scissors, a cardboard (or cut up six 4 x 4 inch squares from a strong and firm carton), glue stick, and a long pencil.

Method

Pull out an entire A4 page from the magazine. Select the magazines that still have their glossy pages firm and strong and which have colours that please your eye.

Using a scissor, cut a straight edge of the magazine page so that it has a clean line finish rather than the rugged edge created when the page is pulled out.

Put some glue on the top side of the magazine paper, beginning with the corner nearest to your body.

Place the pencil diagonally and use it to roll up the edge of the magazine page from the corner with the glue and keep rolling and glueing till you reach the edge of the paper.

Remove the pencil and set aside the straw like rolled up magazine. Repeat the process until you have enough rolled-up magazine pages to cover the cardboard pieces.

VARNISH

Cut the straw like rolled-up magazines to fit the 4 x 4 inch cardboards and using glue, paste them neatly onto the cardboard, cutting off the excess.

There is an option to varnish the top of the coasters, which makes them more durable and protects them against the heat from a hot mug.

This process can be used to make pencil holders from tissue cardboard rolls, mirrors or photo frames or to decorate a shoe box into an organiser box. Some samples made by Goodies African Interiors are shown. Try them out and recycle old magazines into cool magazine rolled up crafts.
