Kitui, Kenya: A Chinese man working with the China Roads and Bridges Construction Company died and three Kenyans sustained serious injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a road accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway on Monday.
The company has the tender to build the Sh327 billion Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Mombasa-Nairobi railway line project.
Police said the man died after the lorry overturned at Miasenyi area as it entered the SGR camp near Maungu township along the highway.
“The lorry was entering the workers’ camp but overturned killing the Chinese and seriously injuring three Kenyans,” said Taita-Taveta County Police Commander Richard Bitonga.
“The driver must have been speeding at the time of the accident. He escaped immediately after the accident and is being sought by police,” said Mr Bitonga.

Bitonga said the body of the deceased, aged 45, was later removed and taken to Voi hospital mortuary and investigations into the accident launched.
“A postmortem examination will be conducted on the body before it is handed over to the relatives for burial,” said the policeman.
The accident comes at a time when the Government is still grappling with road accidents in the region.
Last week, two people died on the spot after a head-on collusion between two lorries along the highway.
