A truck driver has escaped death by a whisker after floods overwhelmed his vehicle on the Galana Kulalu Road, on the border of Kilifi and Tana River counties.

A video shared by Sheldrick Wildlife Trust on its official Twitter page on Wednesday shows a stranded driver trying to save himself from the floods.

At this point, the vehicle had overturned after being overpowered by the moving water and was lying sideways.

"It was 4:30 PM on the afternoon of May 3 when our Galana Operations Manager raised the alarm, the moment we received the call, our Aerial Unit sprang into action," Sheldrick said.

The middle-aged man, whose identity has been withheld, is captured on the video trying to escape through the driver's window as the ragging floods carry away the tanker slowly.

Shedrick stated that the vehicle was being driven across the Galana- Kulalu way before it was suddenly swept by flood waters owing to the heavy rains in the country.

Their Operations Manager raised the alarm on Wednesday asking for help to rescue the driver who had been stuck in the waters from 10 am.

The call prompted the trust to send two of its aerial units Taru Carr-Hartley and Roan Carr-Hartley for the rescue mission.

"They could immediately spot the breached truck, dwarfed by the angry river. As they flew closer, they were relieved to see the driver, still hanging on" the trust added.

On arriving at the scene, the trust says the pilot flew the helicopter down near the raging waters as one of them slowly stepped onto the tanker to hold the hand of the truck driver.

In another rescue mission in December 2022, Roan Hartley, the pilot rescued a four-year-old boy who went missing for almost a week while herding cattle with his brothers.

The boy went missing in Asa village, which borders Tsavo East National Park, on November 28, 2022, and was rescued on December 4 by the pilot using a helicopter

The Trust is an organisation that operates an orphan elephant rescue and wildlife rehabilitation program.
