Eight police officers who have been linked to the theft of Sh25 million from a G4S security van have been sacked.

Commissioner of Police Mathew Iteere said more officers could be arrested and sacked in due course.

Some of suspects linked to the Wednesday incident appeared before a court in Nairobi. Detectives have been dispatched to Nakuru, where suspects’ accomplices are believed to have hidden part of the stolen cash.

Yesterday, Iteere said police have recovered only Sh825,000 from the arrested officers and discounted earlier claims a woman was found with Sh5.6 million.

"As far as I am concerned that is the only money that has been recovered but police are looking for more cash," he said.

Accused Deny charge

He said the escort team left their central room with Sh33 million to feed Barclays, Standard Chartered and Kenya Commercial banks’ ATMs at Yaya Centre and adjacent areas. They had fed two ATMs and remained with Sh25 million.

But a court charge sheet says the accused — four police officers and three G4S employees — stole Sh33 million. The accused — AP officers Simon Mwangi, Suleiman Swalleh, Alfus Wafula and Josephat Onderi, alongside G4S driver Johnstone Kizeze, Silvester Ngui and radio operator Francis Ongera — denied the charges before Kibera courts Chief Magistrate Uniter Kidula and were remanded until Wednesday pending completion of investigations.
