The heart-wrenching story of a four-year-old boy, Maxwell Mureithi, whose treatment has eluded local doctors, may find answer in Israel.

Shemer Medical Centre, in Haifa, Israel, has pledged to help Mureithi acquire the best possible medical care. He suffers from brain damage.

Speaking to The Standard on telephone yesterday, Patient Care Manager Barry Varkel said Shemer has requested for the boy’s medical record from the father, from which they expect to make a diagnosis.

Appealed to Kenyans

"In so far as the costs of the treatment are concerned, we would act solely as facilitators in acquiring the best medical attention that Maxwell so rightly deserves," said Varkel.

Varkel said after the diagnosis, they will have a price for the procedure to be conducted to alleviate the plight of the suffering boy and appealed to Kenyans to contribute.

More than 50 Kenyans, some in the Diaspora, have sent e-mail and called The Standard offices asking how they could assist the sick boy.

Mureithi lapsed into a coma three years ago after suffering diarrhoea and vomiting. He suffered brain damage and is showing signs of paralysis characterised by shrivelled hands and legs. He gets daily convulsions, which cause him immense pain.
