Organisers are working round the clock to ensure success of Madaraka Day celebrations in Narok town on June 1.
Numerous infrastructural development projects are taking shape including upgrading of roads, beautification as well as painting of the newly-refurbished Narok Stadium where the celebration will be held.
A spot-check by The Standard revealed a hive of activities with several streets being rehabilitated.
Narok town dwellers and businessmen have expressed joy over the recent improvement of road infrastructure in the town.
“This Madaraka Day celebrations is godsend. We have been suffering with dust during dry season and flash floods when it rains, but now we are seeing the storm water drainage system and rehabilitation of town roads. We are happy,” said James Kamau, a trader in the town.
President Uhuru Kenyatta will lead the country in marking the celebration.
The Jubilee administration abandoned tradition in 2016 by moving national celebrations outside Nairobi.
Only Jamhuri Day is marked in the capital city.
Nakuru, Kakamega, Machakos and Nyeri have hosted Madaraka and Mashujaa days.
Narok took the opportunity to host this year’s event after the neighbouring Kajiado experienced infrastructural challenges.
For the first time, Narok will have a State Lodge which was built in a record two weeks at the area county commissioner’s office which shall be the venue of the State luncheon during the Madaraka fete.
Interior PS Karanja Kibicho, who is the Chairman of National Celebration Committee charged with organising the event, announced that the mini-state lodge will be officially opened by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Thursday.
The Interior PS said the stadium will on the celebration day open its 10 gates at around 5am. Entertainment will kick off at around 7am with the President expected to make his way to the stadium at 10am.
He also revealed that his ministry has spent Sh98 million in upgrading the Narok Stadium and to construct the State lodge at the county commissioner’s residence.
