Thieves in Kitale eyeing good money were left upset on Tuesday night after breaking into a local shop only to find paltry Sh2,000 coins in a safe.

The thieves are reported to have wasted over two hours drilling a hole to gain access into Chase Drapers, local shop that deals in school uniforms with the hope that they will get good money only to get coins.

Police are investigating how the criminals gained access to the shop since the gate was locked and there were no signs of breakage.

''The thieves thought there was a lot of money in the shop, but that was not the case, there were only a few coins,'' said Trans Nzoia West police boss Joseph Tum.

Tum said detectives have collected vital data from the scene that will help them nab the suspects.

''We are investigating whether it was an inside job and soon we will get to the bottom of the matter,'' said Tum.

The robbery took place without the knowledge of the watchman who was on duty.

The owner of the shop declined to speak to the media saying the matter is under investigation.

''We only lost few coins from the shop and the matter is being investigated by police,'' said a source at the shop.
