Former Leeds United and South Africa striker Phil Masinga has died at the age of 49.
Masinga, who was a legend in his home country, scoring 18 goals in 58 caps for South Africa, died on Sunday after battling a long illness.
The South African Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan took to social media to mourn the passing of the Bafana Bafana legend saying he will forever be remembered in the football fraternity.
“His humility and ability always to try and find cooperation, agreement, and people working together on the administration side in my experience there. And it was a joy when we travelled around the world with him,” he tweeted.
Masinga was part of the South African team that won the African Cup of Nations in 1996.
The legend was also known for scoring the crucial goal that sent Bafana Bafana to the 1998 Fifa World Cup held in France.
Masinga played for European clubs such as Leeds United in England, St. Gallen in Switzerland, Bari and Salernitana in the Italian Serie A, as well as Al-Wahda in Abu Dhabi, before retiring in 2002.
