The Fred Hollows Foundation has donated 10,000 Australian dollars (Sh814, 455) to the West Pokot, Turkana, and Baringo county governments to fight hunger.
The foundation is an Australia-based non-profit aid organisation. The foundation's country manager for Kenya, Jane Ohuma, said while the foundation’s goal is to eliminate avoidable blindness, this cannot be achieved in isolation.
“We will never accept an approach which says we will fix eyes and then stand by while those people watch their families die of hunger,” Ohuma said.
The counties are reeling from a severe drought that is ravaging the country, particularly the arid and semi-arid regions.
West Pokot Deputy Governor Titus Lotee said the funds would supplement relief efforts by the county government. “We are giving maize and maize flour to the people,” he said.
