ELDORET, KENYA: The Government has announced that only 233 public primary schools are yet to be connected with power.

The remaining part of the Sh35 billion electrification project according to the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) shall be completed in the next two months.

The Authority commenced the National Public Primary Schools Electrification project as part of Jubilee government flagship meant to facilitate digital learning.

Speaking in Eldoret after visiting two schools in Chepsaita area, REA Chairperson Dr. Simon Gicharu said they have made tremendous achievements in the past three years.

He said as a means to monitor development, locals will now have a chance to send confirmation reports via the authority website on schools that have not been connected to power.

"We have placed an advertisement in the dailies seeking to find out the schools aside the 233 schools that we have identified that are yet to be powered," said Gicharu.

He said 22,249 public primary schools have fully been electrified and plans are in place to publicly declare that the project has been a success.

He took issue with politicians who have constantly used the ongoing electrification process as a tool to express their selfish agenda saying the electorate should not be hoodwinked by false statements.

"It pains me to hear a section of leaders politicise ongoing powering of school against the backdrop of hard working REA workers who are doing everything possible to ensure that all institutions are connected with power,” he explained.

The Chairperson said the Government has set aside Sh14 billion for the 2016/17 financial year that will be used in the implementation of remaining projects.

He was categorical that they will soon focus on public utilities such as churches before the next general election.

"We shall now be focused on town centers upon completion of public schools so that locals can continue with their daily activities as we gear up towards a 24 hour economy,” he added.
