Mombasa County has set aside 60 acres at Shimo La Tewa, Shanzu for the construction of a multi-million Stadium.

The County Government through Sports and Gender Executive Mohammed Abbas said the county has land at Shimo La Tewa Prison set aside for the construction of the stadium.

"We have found 124 acres of land at Shanzu. I want to confirm that the county government has been cooperative and we are waiting for the national government to fulfill its promise," said Abbas.

During the 2013 General Elections campaigns, the Jubilee coalition pledged to construct five stadiums in the country by the end of their first term in office.

"We have cooperated well with all the central government departments and I wonder why Cabinet Secretary for Sports Hassan Wario said Mombasa County had failed to cooperate," said Abbas.

While giving Jubilee government's score-card, Wario said Mombasa County was non-cooperative in identifying a land for the construction of the new stadium.

Wario has confirmed the Government will start refurbishing stadiums at the county level as they work to finalise logistics required for the construction of five national stadiums.

Wario said the Government requires about Sh30 billion to complete the stadium projects.

"It is complicated since it is a big process. We are looking at the financial proposals to know whether we will go joint-venture way or not, he said.

"We have eight counties that will benefit from the refurbishment and Sh100 million has already been set aside for the refurbishment work," said Wario.

Abbas toured the Mombasa County Stadium and was impressed with the on-going renovations.
