Musician Calvo Mistari

Nairobi: A gang that attacked and robbed Kenyan musician Calvo Mistari has been arrested, almost a month after the incident.

Calvo confronted and snatched two guns from them when they attacked him at his house in Madaraka estate on February 18.

Those arrested in Githurai area include Frank Matutu Khamis alias Suleiman, Peter Macharia Waithaka alias Mgikuyu and Edwin Bwire alias Edu.

Police say they were all at the scene of the robbery at Calvo’s house on February 18 and that they had two pistols and a total of 24 bullets.

During the robbery, Calvo disarmed the gang before they escaped leaving behind the weapons. Calvo was with other artistes for a recording session when the gunmen stormed the recording house and ordered them to lie down after locking the door.

Robbery with violence

The men are expected in court to face charges of robbery with violence and illegal possession of firearms after they were positively identified, police said.

Since the attack took place, police had been protecting Calvo after some of the attackers started calling his friends asking that the guns be returned to them as soon as possible.

The victims said while the gang was searching them for valuables, they heard a knock on the door creating panic in the house.

"By then one of the gunmen had handed over his pistol to his accomplice and was busy grabbing valuables and cash from the victims. It was then that the musician jumped on the one holding the guns and wrestled him to the ground," police said.

Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome said the knock on the door distracted the gunmen and gave the musician the opportunity to go for the guns.

As the visitor was opening the door, the gang ran out and made away with some of mobile phones of some of the victims.

Koome described them as dangerous men and added they are investigating to know if they were involved in other criminal incidents in the city.
