The late Kabete MP George Muchai escaped an attempted murder in October 2011 after he was attacked at night along Kangundo Road in Nairobi.
He had accompanied Central Organisation of Trade Union (COTU) secretary General Francis Atwoli to a fundraising in a secondary school in Mutungu Constituency. He later attended another function in Kikuyu Township and on his way home along Kangungo Road, two cars trailed him.
He was stopped and one of the men came out of the car and ordered him to surrender, but he defended himself. The gangmen, however, shot his thigh. He injured two attackers before driving himself to Nairobi Women’s Hospital, where he was admitted for four days. “I do not understand why someone would want to eliminate me. I have always been a champion of peace and I have not had any differences with anyone,” Muchai was quoted to having said after being discharged from Nairobi Hospital in 2011.
Following the attack, Muchai reported that his life was in danger, and called upon the police to speed up investigations.
In October last year, COTU board ousted Muchai, who was then the labour movement’s deputy secretary-general for alleged unethical conduct.
Muchai was replaced by Mr Benson Okwaro, who will work in an acting capacity until May 2016, when he will be confirmed by the governing council. Muchai moved to court seeking orders to freeze the giant worker’s union bank accounts, and alleged that there had been rampant embezzlement, misappropriation and mismanagement of worker’s deductions that translated to Sh190 billion.
