NAIROBI, KENYA: Former KNUT national chairman Joseph T Chirchir passes on at Nairobi hospital. He was the union chair between 2003-2007.

Deputy President William Ruto was at Nairobi Hospital Sunday morning with the family following the death.

From his Facebook post, he said Chirchir will be remembered for serving the teaching fraternity with dedication and distinction.

He said the country has lost a dedicated trade unionist who stood firm for the rights and welfare of teachers.

“It is with deep sorrow and regret that I send this message of condolence and encouragement to the family, friends and entire teaching fraternity following the demise of former KNUT chairman Joseph Chirchir,” said the Deputy President.

He described the late Chirchir as humble, sociable and generous and hardworking person adding that although he was gone, his contribution to the country’s education sector will be remembered.
