Nairobi, Kenya: Interior Cabinet secretary Joseph ole Lenku has urged Kenyans to be cautious while watching World Cup matches, especially from crowded and open places.

In a statement, the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government says this will ensure bar and restaurant patrons are safe from criminals who may want to take advantage of the World Cup to cause violence.

“Kenyans are strongly advised to watch World Cup matches from the comfort of their homes instead of crowded and unprotected open places,” read the statement by the ministry spokesman Mwenda Njoka.

The ministry also urged Kenyans to also be cautious while at their own homes.

“Although the government has beefed up security in all parts of the country, bar and restaurant owners are at the same time notified to maintain a high sense of security and vigilance in their premises,” read the statement.

A case of criminal attack was reported in Nigeria last week where insurgents targeted fans watching a televised World Cup match in a crowded place.

Just before the World Cup kicked off in Brazil, Nigeria is reported to have closed down a number of sports bars in an effort to stop terror attacks.
