Mirrors are a great way to decorate your living space, especially if living in a space that feels small.

These magical reflective glasses have an amazing way of adding depth and opening up space to give a perception of enlarged space.

Not only will they provide a reflective glimpse of one-self in the bedrooms and bathrooms, they provide definition and enhance the decorative aspect of a room.

Below are some guidelines on how to use these under utilised decorative tools.

Group various mirrors

Find a spot such as a hallway or stairway and group different sizes and shapes of framed mirrors such as square, oval or round.

To create a unifying factor, use similar types of frames like wooden or silver frames.

If using an even number of mirrors, arrange them in symetrical balance; if using an odd number of mirrors such as three of five pieces, then arrange them asymmetrically and look for functional but artistic frames.

Dining room

A simple but exciting way to enhance the dining table is to place a frameless mirror on a rectangular table. This will create such an interest if placed directly beneath a chandelier that hangs over the dining table.

In the evenings, the mirror will catch the lights from the chandelier and create ambience and mood for dinner.

Corridors

For narrow and claustrophobic corridors, placing a mirror where they can catch a window light will open them up and create a sense of depth that removes the claustrophobia of narrow pathways.

Take a step back and ensure that the mirror is reflecting a pleasant scenery such as a painting rather than a cluttered pile of laundry or sink full of unwashed dishes.

Mirrors can be used to create interest along the staircase and can be arranged in descending or ascending order. Alternatively, place a large mirror across the wall in the mid-section landing of a staircase.

Mirrored cabinets

Where wall space is limited in small bathrooms, mirrored cabinets will solve the problem of where to place a mirror. Bathroom mirrors require frequent wiping, especially after the mist collects on them after a shower.

Mirrors on wardrobe doors will also perform the dual role of illuminating the room as they offer full-length mirror service for those needing a head-to-toe view of their attire.

When decorating with mirrors, don’t forget cultural preferences on the use of mirrors. Feng Shui practice, for instance, discourages the use of mirrors in bedrooms.

Hanging the mirrors

Always ensure that the mirror is well supported so that it does not fall and shatter if placed on a weak hook. The mirror should be flat on the wall rather than leaning forward.

Keep most mirrors at eye level unless using a group or decorative frames where some will need to be at a higher level nearer the ceiling. For the best effect, always place a mirror at a place it a can reflect a window light and help bring the outdoor in.
