NAIROBI, KENYA: Safaricom has introduced a new internet bundle targeted at the youth dubbed Chattitude.
For Shs10 a day, customers will be able to access Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp for a day which roughly translates to shs300 a month.
The daily access social internet bundle will target the growing youth market that has taken to social media for their daily communication, but has been hindered by the cost of accessing the internet on a daily basis.
Internet usage has been growing on the back of increased smartphone penetration among Safaricom users and continuous introduction of affordable data bundles with the youth being at the heart of this growth.
“The youth have really been behind the increasing demand for data, to support their preferred communication channels. With this campaign, we are not only offering a solution to the cost associated with access, but we’ve gone a step further to map it to relevant content”, said Safaricom CEO, Bob Collymore.
“Our research has shown that a majority of the youth spend the most time on the net communicating with their friends on the three social network sites. We are therefore pleased to support their needs with this befitting proposition”.
Collymore added that the Shs10 daily bundle will automatically renew after every 24-hours and in the event that the bundle fails to renew due to lack of funds then access to the three sites will be charged at normal cost.
Data customers on the network currently stand at 9.1 million, with over 1.3 million customers already using smartphones. Over 20 million megabytes are used every day, on the network.
Data revenue for Safaricom has grown from 13 per cent in FY 2009 to 29 per cent in FY 2012. Last year data revenue grew by 23 per c growth.
